About this visa

What Is the Freelance Visa?

The UAE Freelance Visa is a self-sponsored residency for solo professionals — issued via a Free Zone Freelance Permit (TECOM/Dubai Media City, RAKEZ, Ajman Free Zone, DMCC, Twofour54 and others). Unlike Investor Visa it requires no UAE company; unlike Employment Visa it doesn't need an employer. The freelancer holds a Freelance Permit (in lieu of a trade license) and is sponsored by the issuing Free Zone.

Freelance Visa suits consultants, designers, content creators, photographers, developers, marketers and other solo professionals. Compared to a full Free Zone company, the Freelance Permit is cheaper (no full license fees) and faster to set up, but allows only one declared activity. For multi-activity businesses, a regular Free Zone company is better.

FAQ

Freelance Visa — Frequently Asked Questions

TECOM (Dubai Media City) is the most established for media / creative. DMCC is premium and broader. RAKEZ and Ajman Free Zone are the budget-friendly choices. Twofour54 (Abu Dhabi) is dedicated to media / gaming. We help match your activity to the right zone.

Freelance Visa is 2-3 years, sponsored by a Free Zone, AED 12,500. Green Visa is 5 years, self-sponsored (no FZ), AED 5,200 — but requires AED 360K+/year income for freelancers. Green is better long-term IF you qualify. Freelance is the entry path.

Generally no — the permit covers ONE declared activity. If you need multiple (e.g. consulting + design + photography), you may need to upgrade to a full Free Zone company with multi-activity license.

No. Freelance Permit is for solo work only. To hire staff, upgrade to a Free Zone company (which can sponsor employees on Employment Visas).

Yes, subject to income threshold. You need to show consistent freelance income (AED 4,000-6,000+/month) via bank statements or invoices, plus an Ejari-registered tenancy. The process is the same as for other visa types.

10-14 days from start to Emirates ID. Permit issuance 5-7 days, then entry permit 3-7 days, then medical / biometrics / ID issuance. If you can submit portfolio quickly, the timeline is fast.
